Does anyone have any interesting information on Urban Agriculture?
Hmmm urban agriculture, do you mean like market gardens? or agriculture to supply urban areas? What type of areas are you interested in? :) .. and come to think of it, which country hehe
Urban agriculture in addition can also involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agro-forestry and horticulture. These activities also occur in peri-urban areas as well. 50% of the world's population lives in cities. Low income urban dwellers spend between 40% and 60% of their income on food each year.
90 percent of urban people do not bother about urban agriculture ... i guess that is interesting enough ... :D
Urban agriculture as in growing food in a major city. I'm interested as to whether or not it can be done on a large scale. If so, what are the options? I'm aware that there are ideas of vertical growing (growing things in say a building, since land in a city is expensive and becoming more and more scarce), and backyard gardens, but what else?
Oh I see, interesting, I haven't really come across this idea before. There is always hydroponics (you can grow fish in the water and lettuce on top with the fish poop feeding the lettuce). I have heard of mushrooms being grown underground (as they do not need light), I think some people are using this idea. You can also buy a box of mushrooms that grow on there own. You could also have gardens on the tops of buildings however I'm not sure how economically viable these ideas are, however I have vague memories of a mushroom farm under a city.
