What is a good, interesting book (or two books that I can compare) to write a 4000 word essay on? Must be acceptable for a grade 12 essay. I am very poor at English, so the easier it is to formulate arguments and locate supporting quotations the better.
Animal Farm by George Orwell compare with Anthem by Ayn Rand. Both are fairly short and have a straightforward message.
I've heard Animal Farm is pretty good, thanks! Do you know what I would be comparing. This is for my IB Extended Essay, and I am doing it in the subject of English. The reason I ask is because they are very picky on how you write it. For example I can't do Kite Runner and then do an economic analysis, because that would be and economics essay. For english it has to be something like a social commentary I think.
They both have a lot to say against communism. Lot's of social commentary on similar things. If you read the books I believe the essay will write itself.
Sounds perfect! Just a quick question, do you think the books will be too short that I won't be able to formulate enough (at least 4) distinct arguments and, even more importantly, enough (at least 2-3 per book per argument) supporting quotations for a 4000 word essay?
1984 by George orwell
^longer book, you could get more out of it. I would recommend a larger book by Ayn Rand but they run about 700 pages.
If you just need 4 arguments, I think you could get enough material from the two books. You could get two and two, or four general arguments and support them with quotations from both books since they are commentary on a similar subject. Could you possibly show us the prompt?
Don't want to do 1984 since that book has been overdone to death for the Extended Essay. I don't really have an assignment summary, but thousands of people from all over the world write the essay in order to obtain their IB (International Baccalaureate) diploma. Also, when I said a comparative essay of 4 arguments, I intended to imply that each argument would encompass at least 2-3 quotes from EACH book, not 2 arguments from one book and 2 from the other. Thanks so much for the advice guys, I really appreciate it!
