find the derivative of sqrt(tan^2x)

If this is:
\[\sqrt{tan^2(x)}\]
Then you simplify first to:
\[tan(x)\] and derive to \[sec^2(x)\]
Seems a bit simple though so perhaps I'm misreading it?
