So the easiest way to look at these is to break the words down into steps. you have a number.. 13. and the word sum. so you know you will have 13 plus something.

now you have a number ( H )... but you need twice that number so you have 2H

therefor you will have 13 +2H

no not really. when it says a number.. it will give a variable right after that such as X or Y or some other letter. All that means is that letter represents an unknown number.
so you can have it say A number X.... or A number Y and thats what it is saying... we have a number we dont know.. so we will give it a letter instead.

"a number y" means the same thing as just saying "y" when it comes to the subtraction it stays with the same rules. "y minus 12" means y-12. its like saying "5 minus 3" that is 5-3 which is not at all the same thing as 3 minus 5 or 3-5
