Where does the word "Neophyte" come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Neo means new where as Phyte means plant. Biological an embroyo of a germinating seed is considered a plant. Well, this is Biology, such type of words are known as portmenteau as two words are combined. The Neophyte here signifies a beginner. The site has introduced something new from the words beginner, starter or elementary instead they are using Neophyte. I am also a Neophyte as you're. :)
