How do neophytes progress through the different levels? For what activities does the system award points? Do I get special privileges on upper levels?

if by special privileges you mean having to obtain an ever increasing total of exp to attain the to the next level; then yes.  i currently have 19229 exp to gain if I want to increase by 1 level :)

You generally get points for getting medals and getting achievements (you can look at any user's profile to see the available achievements). There are some other mechanisms for getting points that we will be introducing over the next few weeks.

Currently, the ranks are mostly for bragging rights. Shortly, avatars will distinguish between different ranks. In the next weeks and months, we will likely be adding various privileges to different ranks.
