If they had the same slope that means either they were parallel (zero solutions), or overlapping (infinitely many solutions). Two lines which have different slopes intersect exactly once. Two solutions doesn't make sense, since a pair of straight lines, if they intersect, either overlap (infinitely many solutions) or intersect once.
