Darla is building a new desk. To make sure she had made a square corner, she measures 5ft. from the corner along one edge and 6ft. from the corner along the other edge. How long should the diagonal be between those two points if the corner is a right angle?

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Hint: use pythagorean theorem. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt{25 + 36} sqrt{61}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is 61 ft

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Think about that for a second, Vincent. If your desk is five feet on one side, and six feet on the other side... how could it be SIXTY ONE FEET across the diagonal? :-p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7.81 ??

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

How did you get 7.81?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

√61

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Correct! :D (also, 7.81 ft makes a bit more sense than 61 ft). :)
