When are we supposed to do assignments? I struggled with ps2 which was marked as due in lecture 4 but in Lecture 4 he just introduced this exhaustive search - brute force method for solving equations. On a side note, it's super annoying that he's repeating his line about being old school Lisp/Scheme hacker?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True. That method he introduced in lecture 4 is applied in ps2. Do the problem sets anytime you want. If you struggle with anything you might need to look at more lectures, review the ones you've already watched, or get help from people here/the python community. \begin{array}l\color{#FF0000}{\text{I}}\color{#FF7F00}{\text{ }}\color{#FF7F00}{\text{l}}\color{#FFFF00}{\text{i}}\color{#00FF00}{\text{k}}\color{#0000FF}{\text{e}}\color{#6600FF}{\text{ }}\color{#6600FF}{\text{h}}\color{#8B00FF}{\text{i}}\color{#FF0000}{\text{s}}\color{#FF7F00}{\text{ }}\color{#FF7F00}{\text{h}}\color{#FFFF00}{\text{a}}\color{#00FF00}{\text{c}}\color{#0000FF}{\text{k}}\color{#6600FF}{\text{e}}\color{#8B00FF}{\text{r}}\color{#FF0000}{\text{ }}\color{#FF0000}{\text{p}}\color{#FF7F00}{\text{r}}\color{#FFFF00}{\text{i}}\color{#00FF00}{\text{d}}\color{#0000FF}{\text{e}}\color{#6600FF}{\text{.}}\color{#8B00FF}{\text{ }}\color{#FF0000}{\text{H}}\color{#FF7F00}{\text{e}}\color{#FFFF00}{\text{ }}\color{#FFFF00}{\text{i}}\color{#00FF00}{\text{s}}\color{#0000FF}{\text{n}}\color{#6600FF}{\text{'}}\color{#8B00FF}{\text{t}}\color{#FF0000}{\text{ }}\color{#FF0000}{\text{j}}\color{#FF7F00}{\text{u}}\color{#FFFF00}{\text{s}}\color{#00FF00}{\text{t}}\color{#0000FF}{\text{ }}\color{#0000FF}{\text{a}}\color{#6600FF}{\text{ }}\color{#6600FF}{\text{b}}\color{#8B00FF}{\text{o}}\color{#FF0000}{\text{r}}\color{#FF7F00}{\text{i}}\color{#FFFF00}{\text{n}}\color{#00FF00}{\text{g}}\color{#0000FF}{\text{ }}\color{#0000FF}{\text{l}}\color{#6600FF}{\text{e}}\color{#8B00FF}{\text{c}}\color{#FF0000}{\text{t}}\color{#FF7F00}{\text{u}}\color{#FFFF00}{\text{r}}\color{#00FF00}{\text{e}}\color{#0000FF}{\text{r}}\end{array}

I think its set up pretty well in the problem set with the mcnugget example though. Plus he's talked about just enumerating and checking all possibilities in a couple other examples. I think the main thing is to read the materials as well and don't be afraid to do some outside google searching. As for his lisp/scheme stuff, I think its him expressing the frustration moving from one language to another.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The point is that should figure the "exhaustive search -brute force method" or something similar out yourself before he gives you the easy answer.

I disagree completely, trial and error approach doesn't work.
