What is a mitosis?

OpenStudy (aroub):

mitosis is whereby a cell splits into two identical cells <-- this is the definition of mitosis if u want to know more just ask!!! :) :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx...ok now can u tell me y it does that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It can be for normal growth, or if some tissue is damaged then its cells have to divide to repair the damage. If you cut your skin, the skin cells have to multiply to fill in the gap. Skin cells also mature and fall off all the time, so new ones must be made through mitosis to replace them. Blood cells work in a similar way - they have a short lifespan so new ones must be made all the time to replace them. There are lots of different reasons for mitosis to happen but that's just some of the reasons in humans anyway.
