-12x^2 -7x +6=0 What is the value of the discriminant? Does the equation have 2 imaginary solutions, one real solution, or 2 real solutions?

OpenStudy (chaise):

Two real solutions. Do you need me to explain how I know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes please :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

& do you know the value of the discriminant

OpenStudy (chaise):

I don't know what a discriminant is. When we solve this equation we use the quadratic formula. I hope you know what this is. When we use the formula we use a square root in the formula. The square root of a NEGATIVE number is IMAGINARY. \[\sqrt{B^2+4ac}\] When we plug in a, b and c, if we get a POSITIVE NUMBER, the solution is real. If it is negative, we get a IMAGINARY NUMBER. Let's go ahead and plug in the number sqrt(-7^2 + 4 x -12 +6) sqrt (49 -48 + 6) sqrt(7) So this number is POSITIVE AND THEREFORE the solution is REAL. I hope this makes sense and I have helped. Let me know if you need further help.

Definitely helpful. Thank you :)
