there's an app called Amazon Student that will give you an overview of the cheapest textbooks available.  if you have any old books, you can also sell them to Amazon for money.

a lot of books are partially or even fully available on google books, try searching that before buying anything. another way to get rid of old books and get new ones is bookmooch.com.
