Could someone please explain how to solve these questions in geometry? Preferably step by step please. Thanks!

Call the required side b and the other leg of that little triangle b, with Pythagorus on that triangle and the big one u can get

b^2 +1 = a^2 and
5^2 +(1+a)^2 = 85+b)^2 and solving gives b = 5/12.
