What is the principle of mathematical induction?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Magnetic induction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is that math section that's physics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mathematical. thats what the question is. its basically a pretest to see what we know. it says "what is mathematical induction"

myininaya (myininaya):

thats not physics lol

myininaya (myininaya):

its math

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

myininaya (myininaya):

it even has the word math in it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^ thank you for defending me satellite73 and myininaya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im talking about the comment saying magnetic induction

myininaya (myininaya):

shhh satellite

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just kidding

myininaya (myininaya):

oh

myininaya (myininaya):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does anyone know what it is though?

myininaya (myininaya):

Mathematical induction: you show it is true for the first case assume it is true for integer k and then show it is true for k+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes we often say "natural numbers are inductive" but rather than get lots of opinions here your best bet is wiki

OpenStudy (anonymous):

merci beacoup peoples!

myininaya (myininaya):

that means thanks alot

myininaya (myininaya):

i know some french

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here for example http://www.themathpage.com/aprecalc/mathematical-induction.htm

myininaya (myininaya):

not very much though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and there are subtleties. weak induction, strong induction, and even something called "transfinite induction"

myininaya (myininaya):

i haven't heard of that last

OpenStudy (anonymous):

induction on well ordered sets rather than natural numbers
