How can we increase the number of mitochondria in the human cell?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The number of mitochondria present in a cell depends upon the metabolic requirements of that cell. You can deprive the human cell from some nutrients, or also you can accelerate the metabolism (higher energy inside the cell) so you force the cell to make more mitochondria. Here is a paper http://goo.gl/2aDFb that can shed some light to you.

Simple answer: working out more. As you work out your muscles begin to require more ATP. The demand for ATP increases so mitochondria begin to replicate in order to produce more for the body.
