A ball is thrown with an initial velocity of 80 feet per second at an angle of 40 degrees with the horizontal. Find the vertical and horizontal components.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the vert and horiz are just the component parts of the "right triangle" sides that are scaled to a hypot of 80

OpenStudy (amistre64):

sin(40) = the up of a unit circle cos(40) = the horiz of a unit scale them by 80

OpenStudy (akshay_budhkar):

80 cos40 is horizontal and 80 sin40 is vertical component by the right angled triangle method

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you say scale them by 80 you mean?...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

multiply them by 80

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks man

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the radius (or hypotenus) of a unit circle is 1; in this case we need it to be 80
