What is an equation?

An equation is a written statement that says one expression is mathematically equivalent to another. Equations will always have an equals sign ("=") in them. So "5 + 5 = 10", "ax^2 + bx + c = 0", "y = mx + b" and "E = mc^2" are all examples of equations.
