an aircraft carrier made a trip to Guam and back. the trip there took four hours and the trip back took four hours. it averaged 6km/h on the return trip. find the average speed of the trip there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am gonna guess it is 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it should be 6km/h, since it took the same time to return and the average speed was 6km/h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure this question is right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because it says the average is 6km/h and then asks what the average is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plus you can just about walk 6 km in an hour so how does the plane stay up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh crap, i made a typo... sorry !!! it took three hours to get there and 4 hours back.!!! sorry!!

OpenStudy (lalaly):

i did this question before thats y i didnt see the mistake :$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. The distance is 24km (4*6) divide 24 by 3 to get 8km/h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok total time is 7 hours, distance is 24 km there and 24 back for a total distance of 48 both ways

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok average speed of trip there right 24/3=8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the average speed for the entire trip?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

48km in 7hrs...plus shore leave for 6000 sailors ;)
