in an experimental design the variable in which the researcher is trying to elict a change is called the ___?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Pretty sure thats an independant variable, the one that's focused on throughout the research.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Student of peace is right. The variable in which a researcher wants to create a statistically significant CHANGE is the INDEPENDENT Variable, while the one that is MANIPULATED is the DEPENDENT Variable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

INCORRECT. In an experimental design, you manipulate the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE. The reason the DV is called a DEPENDENT variable is because the outcome is DEPENDENT on other variables. Hence you manipulate the Independent Variable(s) in an attempt to elicit a change in the Dependent Variable ( http://www.uncp.edu/home/collierw/ivdv.htm)
