First you need to master algebra.

In my experience algebra is undertaught and so are vector spaces etc in favour of calculus. The lack of geometry is lamentable.

While it is true that calculus will help u in lots of ways as a computational stand in for a lot of these things, a lack in the aforementioned areas will hurt in the long run. (I have seen people fill up line after line of calculus to solve a geometric/algebra problem solvable in a few lines).
