what is homologous chromosome?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can easily google that. Humans have 22 pairs of chromosomes and 1 pair of sex chromosomes (females have XX males XY) Each pair is a homologue, homo meaning same. So your chromosome 14 has a homologue chromosome 14. One from your mom one from your dad.

Two chromosomes that carry the same genes in the same order. Mpaolil1 is right, one comes from the mother and one comes from the father. Therefore you have two copies of each gene, and the two copies could be the same or slightly different. For example, if you have a chromosome with the gene for blue eye colour, the homologous chromosome also contains a gene for eye colour. It could be blue, or it could be a different colour.

the same genes, in the same order, with the same purpose, that may be exactly the same or a variation
