In lecture 6, a mass is hanged with a string and a string is attached to the opposite side. if a force is applied to bottom one which string will break first? Can anybody explain the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if the mass is high the bottom one will break first if you apply very high force lasts very short amount of time. except that the top one will break first

It depends on the duration of force acting on the string, if one applies force gradually the top string breaks if he applies a jerk then bottom string would break. In the lecture, professor asked to explain this phenomenon with the help of newton laws, which is law of inertia. I dont know the exact explanation.
