u have to make the fractions have the same denominator. so we find the lcm which is 20 in this case. multiply the top and bottom by a number that makes the denominator 20 (4/5)(4/4)=16/20 (1/4)(5/5)=5/20 16/20 is the same as 4/5 and 5/20 is the same as 1/4 so we can substitute the values 4/5+1/4=16/20+5/20 now that the denominator is the same we can add the numerator (16+5)/20 21/20
