What does "once you let the smoke out, they never work right again." mean and where does it come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's an electronics phrase. When you fry something - say a circuit board - usually it lets out a puff of smoke as the silicon fries. Then it never works again. This is sometimes referred to as "magic smoke".
