can I get more help with this problem? 10-x^2-3x/x^2+2x-8. The directions say, "Simplify," then it gives the problem, then it says, "Identify any x-values for which the expression is undefined. Anyone?

OpenStudy (aroub):

ok first u have to factor the numerator and the denominator... (can u do that?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-x+2)(x+5)/(x+4)(x-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x not= -4 and 2

OpenStudy (aroub):

yes...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aroub, i can factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

doing it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hang on

OpenStudy (aroub):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-x-2)(x-5)/(x-2)(x+4)

OpenStudy (aroub):

yes but it suppose to be +5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but then i get -10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

instead of -x^2-3x+10

OpenStudy (aroub):

yes , -(x^2+3x-10) , u put the negative outside..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh. ok. so now i have -(x-2)(x-5)/(x-2)(x+4) now what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops. (x+5)

OpenStudy (aroub):

ah! ok at the moment we dont care abt the numerator, look at the denominator u have (x-2)(x+4)

OpenStudy (aroub):

(x-2) <--- what number u add or subtract it eaquals to zero??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x-2)? i dont know :/

OpenStudy (aroub):

equals* / think.. , ok solve it x-2=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=2

OpenStudy (aroub):

yes! :)

OpenStudy (aroub):

ok now the next one (x+4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=-4

OpenStudy (aroub):

yes!

OpenStudy (aroub):

ok greeaatt! so did u get it??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so do i replace (x-2) with 2?

OpenStudy (aroub):

ok wait.. ur question is asking that "Identify any x-values for which the expression is undefined" so u have to write 2 and -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would i change -(x-2)(x+5)/(x-2)(x+4) to -2*-5/2*-4?

OpenStudy (aroub):

no..

OpenStudy (aroub):

x is not equal 2 and x is not equal to -4 ( i wanted to write the not equal sign but the equation box is not working..! :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh! ok. got it. thank you so much :)

OpenStudy (aroub):

hehehe okay! no probblleemm!!!!!! :D ;D
