Cant you only get Chicken Pox once in life?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. but u can get shingles later on in life. shingles is a reactivation of the same virus VZV - varicella zoster. as for shingles. i am not sure but i think u can get more than once

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it was generally thought that second episodes of chicken pox was rare. but post-vaccine studies suggest that second episodes do occur, albeit at a lesser severity than the primary case. after you get chickenpox, the virus can lay dormant in a sensory ganglia. when it gets reactivated, it causes shingles, which is a painful, vesicular eruption in that nerve's skin distribution. you can get shingles more than once but it's not common unless you are immunocomprised.

My friend got chicken pox three times already

You can get it more than once. The majority don't, but some do. ttom brought up a good point about shingles. The chicken pox virus (herpes zoster) remains alive in your nerves, and can later reactivate and cause shingles.

i have not got chiken pok till now

OpenStudy (nilankshi):

pox

Nilankshi, have you gotten the vaccine then? If not, you better. Chicken pox is much worse and can to lead to bigger problems such as infertility if you get it when you are older.
