it consists of a muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the stomach.it opens during vomiting and swallowing.... i think its for ingestion nly....

It is part of Ingestion, once in the stomach digestion takes place though there is minor breakdown and absorption in the mouth as enzymes begin the breakdown process of food
