does plastic degrading organism exist in nature?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes micro organisms like fungi and bacteria(decomposers) but the process of degrading plastic takes several years...as it is man made

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plastics are manmade polymers. Polymers are not degradeable by natural organisms as is, but after many years exposed to factors like direct sunlight, oxidous rain, greenhouse gases ect, the polymer bonds break, so the natural organisms are able to degrade the organic monomers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. not recently a couple of grad students from yale where searching for new organisms somewhere in the amazones. they planted petri dishes, and on the next morning lost one. as it happens a previously unknown fungus ate through the petri dish over night - Pestalotiopsis microspora
