x^2-12x+30=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use x=-(-b)plus minus square root b square -4ac whole thing over 2a

This can be done completing the squares also since the b value is even.

\[x^2-12x=-30\] Add \[\frac{1}{2} b^2\] to both sides: \[x^2-12x+36=-30+36\] \[(x-6)^2=6\] Take square root of both sides: \[x-6=\pm\sqrt{6}\] \[x=6\pm\sqrt{6}\]

You can confirm this by doing it out the long way using the quadratic equation.
