Read like a fluttering maniac and write like a fluttering maniac. Study Writing styles of those you admire. Read Dorothea Brand on 'Becoming a Writer'.it will help you see the obstacles coming in the way of writing and the difficulties of becoming a Writer proper.

The more in touch with Literary World you are via podcasts, Literary Columns in Broadsheet Newspapers, University Writing Public Lectures etc Edinburgh Book Fest etc the more you are aware of Literature and it's types. Listen also to Audiobooks free via Librivox to save £££. Also don't be afraid to write what is REALLY going on in your life and in private, private stories etc. This will help break stranglehold of the inner critic. Aim for first novel normal size 300k and above NOT 50k nanowrimo. Google how to write 5000 words a day. hope it helps.
