Repeated addition can be shorthanded with multiplication. For instance, 3+3+3+3 = 12 can be represented as 4*3 = 12 Now conceptually replace each '3' with 'x' to get x+x+x+x = 4x Of course, you can use any number you want as an example and it will still work.
