Do ectomycorrhizae enter the cell wall or do they remain in the inter cellular spaces?
They remain in the inter cellular spaces . The fungus forms a thick coat of hyphae on the root called a mantle. Just below the mantle lies a thin layer of epidermis or the first layer of cells of the the root and below it lies the cortex . Nutrient exchange between the root must occur through the intermediate layer of the fungus mantle. The fungus grows inbetween the epidermal cells and that of the cortex , basically coating and isolating the plant cells from each other . The hyphae are all well connected with each other with the help of pasmodesmata. The conducting system of the root ; the style transfers water and nutrients passed on by the fugus to all the other parts of the plant , so the fungus acts as an interface between the environment and the plant root and between the plant root cells themselves.
