Question

Is {1, sin^2 x, cos^2 x} linearly independent? My answer is no cause sin^2 x + cos^2 x = 1. But I am not sure if I am on the right track.

You are correct, since 1 is a linear combo of the other two, this means that it's linearly dependent.
