what system is used for measuring and why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Metric (SI units) the is system of measurement most commonly used in scientific and military applications because of the ease of conversion between the different units (simply multiply/divide by 10). This is in opposition to the English system, where the conversion factors are very arbitrary (who decided a mile was 5,280 feet? Who decided that a gallon was 128 fluid ounces?)

I agree with Brandon. Metric is the standard system in use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_system is the wikipedia link should you need any more information.

Some King said : come and measure ME, and it will become the YARD. Very Standard.

Metric system is the scientific standard used more often, MKS, meter (M), mass (Kg), and time (S). This has become the commonly use standard all over the world. If something else is used such as CGS (much smaller unit) it will be indicated. The English units is much harder to work with as indicted in the answer given by brandon376.
