Well you could start off with how the English language originated from the Anglo Saxons, that developed a way to communicate with others. And from there on they started branching off..

For grammatic "diagramming" see this: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/diagrams/diagrams.htm When I was in gradeschool we did something very similar to this. Drawing a structure showing the relations between the words in a sentence.
