x-7=50

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what happens when we subtract 7 from both sides?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$\left| x \right| -7=50$

OpenStudy (amistre64):

same concept; except x is either positive of negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i meant that ^^

OpenStudy (amistre64):

|x| = x |-x| = x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how do you work it out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whatever you do to one side, you do to the other. To isolate x, you have to add 7.. so you need to do that with both sides. Absolute value means that x can be both negative or positive.. |x| - 7 = 50 x = 57 or x = -57, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$\left| x \right| = 57$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now what?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

now determine for what values of x makes it a true statement according to how an absolute value is defined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so theres 2?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks
