How do you solve this? Solve for y: a(y+c)=b(y+c)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by thinking. the only way for these to be equal is if \[a=b\] in which case it is equal for any y. if \[a\neq b\] then the only way for this to work is if both sides are 0, i.e. if \[y=-c\]
