how to be good at chemistry

OpenStudy (preetha):

Hi I have been a chemistry prof for a long time. Here are my tips. 1. Make sure you understand what the concepts are before you try to memorize. Try to explain these concepts back to someone. 2. Memorize or at least make your self very familiar with formulae and equations - but know what they mean. 3. Work through problem sets and before you go to the solution manual for help, try to read through that material in the book. 4. Develop your set of notes to summrize each chapter that you study. 5. go to the teacher for help to explain difficult concepts. 6. read the book... read the book again.

My highest recommendation is don't take Chem during a shortened term, say summer semester. As mentioned above, it's a lot of material to cover and store in your brain. Notes of the formulas and how to apply them will be your best friend. The ability to convert between units is very helpful. Most importantly, get the ability to work with Significant Figures down pact. You will thank yourself when you hit the lab. Trailing 0s count as significant figures.
