Mr. Doodle’s grade distribution over the past 3 years for a course in college algebra is shown in the chart below. Grade Number A 45 B 180 C 110 D 95 F 65 I 5 If Jane plans to take a college algebra course with Mr. Doodle, determine the empirical probability that she receives an A.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

need o determine the mean and the standard deviation from this right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do u figure these types of problems out?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

determine the mean of the means :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it just asks determine the empirical probablity that she receives an A

OpenStudy (amistre64):

is an A within 1sd, 2sd, 3sd, or 4sd of the mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

then as far as i can tell, youd have to take the mean of the data given, determine the standard deviation and see where it lies; unless im just reading it wrong

OpenStudy (amistre64):

my side thought is to add it all up to get a total and see what 45/total is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is all it gives me for problem.. lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

there is enough information to do it wither way, i just can tell which one is the right way yet :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

either way ... not wither ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the easier way? lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

32 45 180 110 95 65 5 ---- 500 total 45/500 = 9/100, or 9%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats makes sense..

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lol .. makes sense to me too, which is why i have to wonder if its right :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aww. im not worried about it.. :) if its wrong I will let ya know.. lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yippee!!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

250/3 would be the mean if we did it the other way, which is just to laborious and time consuming ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aww i liked other way its easier.. lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the empirical rule is; that 68% of the data falls within 1sd of the mean that 95% of the data falls within 2sd of the mean that 99% of the data falls within 3sd of the mean so the terminology has me guessing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG.. thats GREEK to me.. lmao i like other way better.. simple

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i like the other way better too ;) good luck with it all

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ty hon.
