In general exponents mean that a particular term is raised to a power. For example, 2^3 means that the term 2 is multiplied by itself three times. In other words, 2^3 is equal to 2 times 2 times 2 whichis equal to 8.

The same thing applies to unknows such as the letter x. For example, x^4 means that x is multiplied as x times x times x times x which equals x^4.
