What the squirrel....I need your help with my algebra you people.....please???? Write the verbal sentence as an equation, or an inequality. Twenty-three less than the difference of thirty-eight and a number "n" is less than eight.

OpenStudy (a_clan):

(38-n)-23<8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nande?!?!?! Why is the 38 in parenthesis in front???? O______O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes u are subtracting 23 from 38-n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, the 23 doesn't have to be in front?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(38-n)-23<8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

23 less than the difference of 38 and a number n means (difference of 38 and a number)-23 is less than 8 (38-n)-23<8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well actually u can write -23+(38-n)<8 and it wouldnt make a difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but when u use the word from

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...........................what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i use the word from like u had 4 apples and i took 2 apples FROM U i would write it as 4-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. Why the (-) in front of the 23?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because u are taking 23 not adding to the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it's an equation because????? I don't see an equal sign. O___O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it's an inequality

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my bad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jessica i thought u were asian man u should know this stuff, the asians in my school are like killer smart

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I'm stupid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol i didnt say u were stupid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aw now u got me feeling all bad for being mean thanks alot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(38-n)-23<8 = -23+(38-n)<8 You see the minus sign in front of the 23? That can technically be a negative sign... it's kind of hard to explain, but (38-n)-23<8 is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont mean to be mean im sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WHAT THE HOW ARE U ALL THAT?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Help me with my algebra.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are u angry at me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that all, that can be done to the problem/whatever it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes Jessica Hahd did that right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ishaan explain it in sentences

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, can you explain how you can witch the sides? It doesn't make sense to me...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*switch

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did you get (38-n)-23<8 <--------- This inequality ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what Hahd, and appleclan said....is "less than the difference of 38" just this? <

OpenStudy (anonymous):

38 - n - 23 < 8 Add 23 both sides 38 - n - 23 + 23 < 23 + 8 38 - n < 31 Add n both sides 38 -n + n < n + 31 38<31+n Subtract 31 both sides 38-31<31-31+n 7<n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea that's it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Didn't it say "Write the verbal sentence as an equation, or an inequality."? You simplified it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

n is greater than 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it is possible to simplify it further? And 7<n is the final answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea that is the final answer
