Two planes left an airport at noon. One flew east and the other flew west at twice the speed. After 3 hours the planes were 2700 mi apart. How fast was each plane flying?

The velocity of plane 1 = x and the velocity of plane 2 = 2x
The planes are moving away from each other at the rate of 3x.
Because d=vt
where d= distance
v= velocity and
t= time
2700=(3x)3
therefore x= 300 and 2x = 600
