"Genghis Khan: Birth of an Empire" (or "Wolf of the Plains" in nonamerica places) by Conn Iggulden is a nice book.

The Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. Trust me it is amazing

depending on your reading level.... an interesting read but very easy text is Ann Rinaldi. She has written historical fiction for eras from Queen Elizabeth I, the Salem With Trials, and the Civil war; all are very well written, but simple with a lot of fiction, rather than a lot of factual history.
