I am horrible with word problems. An open-top box with a square base is to be constructed from 110 square centimeters of material. What dimensions will produce a box with largest possible volume?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just need a push in the right direction for solving this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Without working it all out and assuming u can use all the material, let the side of the square base be x and the height be h, then SA = 4xh + x^2 and V = x^2h.

OpenStudy (a_clan):

We have to find maxima on the volume

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find a formula for V in terms of x only differentiate and equate to 0 solve to find x then find h these are the required dimensions confirm maximum using second derivative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm assuming u know some calculus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am in pre-calculus right now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

110/l*w*h to get the volume
