I have one of the newer ones, and it has very powerful standard functions. Solves equations symbolically. Writes matrices in reduced row echelon form (a standard function you don't have to program yourself), and it's programmable in TI-BASIC, C, or Motorola 68k assembler

My school (I recently graduated btw) required it on most calculus tests, and the science teachers didn't care I was using it (as long as I didn't use it to cheat by writing answer keys in it :-P)

I guess that's why it's forbidden... you can program it to do your homework and to cheat in tests
