OpenStudy (anonymous):
√(4(-2) + (-3)^2) = 1, I used the same method to work out:√(4^2+-3^2) and got 25, but my textbook gives the answer 5( which is the sq root of the numbers added) why???

because they simplified it. √(4^2 + (-3)^2) √(16 + 9) √(25) = 5
