It's probably talking about how there's tons of different people and cultures in America after the immigrant boom in the early twentieth century, so we're not all white or speak only english or only assosciate with England

It's the notion of the American immigration movement to the "new land" in which they were all previously defined by their European social and national boundaries, those boundaries slowly eroded as they all came to live together in one country. There was no longer a separation between them nationally and there was a slow melting/blending of their social differences into a single recognized nation as a mixed conglomerate society, a "melting pot".
