A string is 12 inches long. The string is cut into 2 pieces. The longer piece is twice as long as the shorter piece. Find the length of the two pieces. I know that the pieces are 4 and 8 inches., but how do you solve step by step and how do you label the variables?

ok so 2x+x=12, 3x=12, x=4. plug x in to 2x+x. so 2(4)=8, 1(4)=4.
