What role does oxygen play in the formation and breaking of bonds?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In many biological reactions, hydration and condensations reactions are important in the formation and breakage of bonds. During these reactions, oxygen combines with hydrogen to either enter or leave as water. For example, amino acid linkage occurs when water leaves, allowing the formation of the backbone. The reverse reaction allows for amino acids to be broken down. I hope that helps!
