in physics, is average velocity and average speed the same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. Average velocity has a direction, average speed is a magnitude s(t) = |v(t)|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does the equation mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

velocity can be negative or positive, speed is always positive... The negative part of velocity would just give the speed a direction making it a velocity
